When your cartilage is damaged, either by primary osteoarthritis or secondary osteoarthritis (after an injury) you are going to pay a price. Cartilage protects the bones from coming into contact with one another and if they do, it is extremely painful.
Whether as a result of aging; overuse; genetics; or, injury, some 40 million Americans suffer from Osteoarthritis. An estimated 10 million remain undiagnosed. Worldwide, the number is about 350 million who have OA.
It has been estimated that one in five dogs are diagnosed with osteoarthritis in their lifetime. For cats, one study reported that as much as 98% of cats over the age of twelve suffer from osteoarthritis as well as 60% over the age of 6 suffering from OA.
Glucosamine is a charged sugar molecule that is a key component of the extracellular matrix of cartilage (grout between the cartilage cells). It absorbs and releases water with every step you take and when it does, it acts as a ‘shock absorber’ for your joints.
Glucosamine is a natural sugar produced by your body. It is the essential and principal ingredient that determines the quantity of proteoglycans (water-holding) molecules that also form in your body. The greater the amount of glucosamine in your body, the greater the number of proteoglycans. Proteoglycans are large, water-binding molecules made up of both proteins and sugars. It is important to understand that they are the major building block of vital and healthy cartilage.
Glucosamine products are nutritional supplements and are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, Synflex® is manufactured in the United States with (USA) pharmaceutical-quality ingredients, in an NSF cGMP certified facility. This means that our lab is in full compliance with the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practices. This system ensures that the procedures and documentation of the product represents quality. A Certificate of Analysis accompanies each batch which ensures that each ingredient represented is in compliance with stated measurements and specifications.
It is advisable to maintain a daily dose of ¼ oz. (1.5 teaspoons) per day. Those who are over 220 pounds may wish to maintain a higher dose than that. (1/2 oz. per day) If you believe that your arthritis does not warrant a full daily dose or, if you are taking Synflex® as some way to help keep your cartilage healthy you may want to drop your dose by half of what you had been taking.
If you want faster results, we recommend doubling your daily dose (one in the morning and one in the evening) for the first 7-10 days. Then, dropping back to a single dose a day.
You can take Synflex® as long as glucosamine has not been a problem in the past. The antigen in shellfish that causes the allergic reaction to shellfish has been removed from Synflex®. Nonetheless, we recommend you consult with your physician before using Synflex®.
In fact, new research indicates that glucosamine is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction in someone who has an allergy. In most cases, allergies are caused by proteins in shellfish and not chitin, a carbohydrate from which glucosamine is extracted. Furthermore, there is no crossover between the acid derived chitin from shells and the antigens that cause shellfish allergies. The reason? The acid process required to leach the chitin from the shell strips away the carbohydrate side chains that would be antigenic.
Synflex® 1500 has an all-natural citrus orange flavor. Our original Synflex® formula has an all-natural tart apple flavor.
For pets, we offer a beef flavor in addition to the Synflex® Original. For pets, we recommend either administering the dose on their food using an eye-dropper for smaller animals. It can be given to them directly into the mouth but that is often met with some resistance.

Pets appear to like the flavor of Synflex®. There are two formulas to choose from. The Original formula has a tart, berry flavor. We also have a beef flavor available for pets. We actually have reports from pet owners that if they do not put Synflex® on their pet’s food after they begin using it, the animals will back away without eating. That appears to be a sign that they recognize that Synflex® is helping them with their discomfort.
Ordinarily, pets become more active between 3-10 days after they are on Synflex®. In more difficult cases, it may take up to 30 days. We have had many dog owners say that their “older dogs are like puppies again.”
We recommend just adding the Synflex® directly to their food. Of course, the amount is based on the body weight of the animal. (Read the directions carefully.)
- The Synflex® Original formula can be used by both humans and for family pets. It contains 1,250 mg. of glucosamine in a ¼ oz. serving and has a berry flavor and is an excellent first introduction to liquid glucosamine if you haven’t used a glucosamine supplement before.
- The Synflex® 1500 formula is recommended for humans and athletes only. It contains contains 1,500 mg. of glucosamine in a ¼ oz. serving along with the added boost of white willow bark — a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient that has been used in pain remedies since 1823. Synflex 1500 is orange flavored, and our only formula to include white willow bark.
- The Synflex® Beef formula contains 1,500 mg. of glucosamine in a ¼ oz. serving. So, if your pet is clearly demonstrating soreness or is lame, you might opt for the beef formula just to gain the extra amount of glucosamine. We have had great success with pets, including those with hip dysplasia.

- The recommended daily dosage for humans is 1/4 of an ounce per day of liquid glucosamine formula Synflex®. You may wish to double the dose during the first 10 days to a 1/2 oz. for maximum effectiveness and arthritis relief.
- If you are over 230 pounds, you may find that staying with a 1/2 oz. daily dosage works more effectively.

You do not have to refrigerate Synflex®. You can store it at room temperature unlike some products on the market. The darkening in color is nothing more than light striking the Synflex® bottle which in turn, darkens the liquid. (Oxidation)
When this happens, the formula appears darker but it tastes the same and is still effective until the expiration date on the bottle.
