I know many people who are devoted to drinking soda. It is almost as if they can’t live without it. If you are a soda drinker, you may change your habits after reading this.
Soda has been linked to high blood pressure. That may sound far-fetched but it is a reality. And, the facts are not good if you care about your health.
The clinical study in question spanned some 10-12 years and involved about 150,000 women between the ages of 25 and 67. The purpose of this particular study was in fact to study the effects of drinking coffee because it contains caffeine. This was to determine if caffeine affected blood pressure and specifically for coffee drinkers. The study found that coffee did not elevate blood pressure but drinking soda did.
This study concluded that caffeine from soda caused about 20% of those in the study group to have high blood pressure. (Hypertension) The target age were those women who were age 43 and above. Those who consumed caffeinated and sugared soda had a nearly 50% greater risk of hypertension if they had four or more sodas daily.
The purpose of this study as noted was that it was seeking proof that caffeinated coffee caused hypertension. In fact, the study found that coffee had zero impact in terms of developing hypertension.
This led the researchers to speculate that some other ingredient in soda played a role in the development of hypertension. This would be understandable speculation under the circumstances.
Another finding was that diet sodas also carried the same risk of developing hypertension. That is curious but conclusive in terms of these results.
I think it is safe to say that avoiding soda whether regular or diet is a sound approach to healthy living given these findings.
